By the 5th grade, young people are navigating some of their earliest relationships outside of the family. Our curriculum for 5th graders helps students begin to think about these relationships and the important roles they will play in their lives. At this grade-level our focus is not on dating and dating violence prevention specifically, but on friendships with peers and relationships with important adults in kids' lives. Simply stated, our primary goal is to provide young people with the information and skills they will need to avoid becoming victims or perpetrators of violence.

A brief overview of The Katie Brown Educational Program's 5th Grade Curriculum:

At the end of the first class session, students will have learned to:
define relationship violence,
reflect on and discuss their usual choices and behavior in relationships, and
practice standing up for themselves and their ideas.

At the end of the second class session, students will have learned to:
define "personal power" and "self-esteem," and
reflect on and discuss their own sense of who they are and what they are proud of about themselves.

At the end of the third class session, students will have:
practiced supportive, respectful listening,
practiced group decision making and presentation skills,
reflected on their own positive attributes, accomplishments, and successes, and
learned techniques to foster positive self-esteem and to handle difficult emotions.

At the end of the fourth session, students will have:
defined their "rights" in relationships,
practiced group decision making and communication skills, and
voted on their class "Bill of Rights in Relationships."

At the conclusion of the fifth and final session, students will have:
spent time reflecting on the rights voted on by the class,
identified the feelings someone whose rights have been violated may experience,
and identified some ways to handle difficult situations in which their rights or
someone else's rights are being violated.
