PROGRAM: 5th GRADE
A brief overview of The Katie Brown Educational Program's 5th Grade Curriculum:
Session One - Relationship Violence 101:
- » Pre-Tests
- » Definition of Violence
- » Four types of Violence
- » Definition of Relationships
- » Agree/Disagree game (emphasizes personal choice and the way we treat others)
Session Two - Personal Power and Self-Esteem:
- » Discussion on personal power and positive self esteem (being proud vs. bragging)
- » Guided Visualization (asks students to visualize their “power place”, a place they feel confident, safe, and responsible for themselves and their actions)
- » Power Puzzle (students create a puzzle of their power place)
Session Three - Personal Pride:
- » Students given the first part of class to share power puzzle with other students (emphasize sharing positive things about ourselves builds self-esteem)
- » Discussion on “standing up for yourself” vs. “fighting back”
- » Discussion on taking pride in your accomplishments: how being proud increases self-esteem
- » Worksheet on how to take care of yourself and others
- » Students play with power puzzles for the remainder of class
Session Four - Bullying:
- » Discussion on bullying: defining and giving examples of bullying
- » Understanding the Bully/Victim relationship
- » Positive strategies to prevent bullying in the classroom and in the school community
- » Creation of a class “Bully Book”
Session Five - Bullying Cont.
- » Read “Bully Book” to the class, allow students to respond to the solution presented in their own book: allow students to discuss the different strategies, and brainstorm how to put them into effect.
- » Read a book about bullying and discuss to wrap of bullying lesson.
