A brief overview of The Katie Brown Educational Program's 6th Grade Curriculum:
Session One – Relationship Violence 101:
- » Survey: Part 1
- » Definition of Violence
- » Four types of Violence
- » Definition of Relationships
- » Agree/Disagree Game (emphasizes personal choice, responsibility, and how we treat others)
Session Two – Personal Power and Self-Esteem:
- » Discussion on taking responsibility for ourselves and our actions; how this effects our relationships, our classrooms, schools, families, and community.
- » Guided Visualization
- » Journaling
Session Three – Anger:
- » Topic Icebreaker: M&M Game (students have to take 1-3 M&Ms, and describe one thing that makes them angry for each they took)
- » Discussion about what makes students angry
- » Understanding anger: anger as a second emotion
- » Identifying anger cues
- » Propose easy, everyday solutions and options for managing feelings in order to avoid acting out negatively in anger
Session Four – Rights in Relationships:
- » Discussion about rights in relationships: understanding the difference between wants and rights
- » Group activity on rights – students work in small groups to generate a list of rights and vote on them as a class
Session Five – Rights and Responsibilities:
- » Have a discussion connecting rights in relationships to personal responsibility and boundaries Discuss how to uphold (not violate) the rights of others
- » Anger Bingo Game – connecting themes of managing emotions and responsibility
