A brief overview of The Katie Brown Educational Program's 7th Grade Curriculum:

Session One – Relationship Violence 101:

  • » Pre-Tests
  • » Definition of Violence
  • » Four types of Violence
  • » Definition of Relationships
  • » Agree/Disagree game (emphasizes personal responsibility and consequences)

Session Two – Friendship:

  • » Discussion of what is important in a friend: qualities we like and dislike
  • » Peer pressure, fitting in, and acceptance in friendships
  • » Friendship Bingo

Session Three – Conflict:

  • » Understanding conflict: emphasizing that conflict can be positive depending on our approach
  • » Aggressive, passive, and assertive responses to conflict
  • » Role play scenarios to help students understand the different approaches to conflict, and how the assertive approach is the most effective way to resolve problems

Session Four – “All About Me” Collage Activity:

  • » Brief re-cap of previous discussions on the Agree/Disagree game, friendship and conflict
  • » Emphasize that our choices of friends and how we handle conflict shows us a lot about ourselves
  • » Students create a collage about themselves – categories include Family, Friends, Activities and Interests, Things Most People Don’t Know About Me, My Favorites

Session Five – Intro to Dating Relationships:

  • » Have students share their collages with the class
  • » Intro to dating: similarities between qualities we want in a friend and qualities we want in a dating partner
  • » Dating Profile activity – students begin to think about what is important in a dating relationship: emphasize being healthy, having fun, and being ourselves
  • » Post-Tests
